Not As Bad As Expected

So the US lost 2-1 to the Netherlands today, and could have done even better if their last minute push had come in something other than the last minute. I’m pleased with this. I don’t think Landon Donovan had much of a game, but I think that’s because he was marked out of the game. I’m sure he had an impact in other ways.

I’m more concerned about Stuart Holden. He went down injured and hopefully will be able to play in the cup. If only because the hopes and dreams of all of Scotland are riding on him. No pressure or anything.

But really, that game wasn’t as bad as some have said. This was the third ranked team in the world, after all. I think the US was extremely solid defensively, and just didn’t have the right pairing up front. Despite all the talk about his speed, Robbie Findley? Really. I don’t think so.

It may just be me, but I think that the US is getting set to peak at the right time, bringing people off the injured list and back into the fold at just the right time. When it comes down to it, I’d rather beat teams in the World Cup than in warm-ups.

I don’t believe this will be a good World Cup for Europe. I think the European teams will struggle here (although I think one will probably win it, but that’s another story) so it’s just a matter of the US taking advantage of the European lapses and getting out of the group phase.

I’m sure I’ll have more to vent on this as the cup approaches.
