The Quotable Abigail, Part XXVI

On whether the animal she’s thinking of swims: “A lion.”

On dressing: “Pants and undies? I’m not sure about that.”

On why I shouldn’t make noise when she’s trying to sleep: “If you keep doing this, I’m going to have to turn myself into a fish. And what am I supposed to do about that?”

On why she won’t sleep, with blinking to demonstrate: “I can’t close my eyes for that long.”

On my driving: “I’m going to have to talk to Mom about this. You weren’t watching the rails, Dad.”

On my growling and munching at her: “You can’t eat persons! Eat Limbo instead!”

On consoling her doll: “Heidi, please don’t be emotional.”

On Gabe through a magnifying glass: “He looks big and burly.”

On things that are funny across generations: “I’m wearing the sunglasses in the night!”

On things to say, bossy and incoherent: “You talk more speechless than I am.”

On soothing a crying baby in the car: “Now don’t you worry. Don’t you be even nervous.”

Bonus Quotable: On “Beauty and the Beast” as retold to her brother through stickers: “She was the enchantress who turned the beast back into love.”

The Quotable Abigail, Part XXV

On the prospect of impending Christmas: “Yummy in my hair! Yummy in my eyeballs!”

On the glass of water she’s holding: “Dad, is this from tomorrow?”

On Gabe finishing breast feeding: “Stop that and get back on the arm pit!”

On her chocolate advent calendar: “You know what I need? One of those things right over there.”

On why she doesn’t want Santa to come to her house: “Because I think that’s enough toys for me.”

On urgent and unusual – even in context – bedtime requests: “Stand on books, Daddy! Please!”

On good bathroom chants: “No one come and poop with meeee. No one come and poop with meeee.”

On her body: “I’m a pancake that’s really, really long.”

On our family status: “Mom? Do we have a baby still?”

On units of measurement: “Miles and miles of years ago: tar pits!”

Your Monday Morning Burst of Oxytocin

Presented without commentary. Well, except for this here. If I hadn’t noted that it was being presented without commentary, then it would have been presented without commentary.

The Quotable Abigail, Part XXIV

On labor and delivery optimism: “Maybe I’ll catch baby brother!”

On Gabe’s so-called birthday: “Why didn’t we have cake?”

On what to say to the little girl at swim class: “You can look at me, if you want.”

On where she is: “I’m in your epiglottis! Running down your throat!”

On encouraging the dog to keep walking: “Come on, Maggie, you old thing.”

On what she would like for a present: “I don’t like bad things. I only like good things. I only like butterflies and other things that are good.”

On what Grandma Pat can get us from the store: “I thought of something. Can you get me a fairy?”

On what we’re going to do: “We’re going to do a somersault. You know, a somersault? Yee-haw!”

On the PGA event on television: “Where’s Grandpa Mike, though?”

On what her brother’s name is, five days after he was born: “I don’t know.”

Ellie Hearts Abigail

Time for a momentary aside from the photos of Gabe. Los Funtime came for a visit the other day and Ellie got to hang out with the new big sister. It was love at first epic squeal. Here’s the video:

I would also like to note that this video was edited and uploaded, and this blog post was written, with Gabe sleeping in my left arm. Hunt and peck isn’t easy on an ergonomic keyboard.

For Comparison Only

Since Gabe has been born I’ve experienced a profound and unexpected sense of completeness. There’s something about a family of four that just feels right. There’s something about having a daughter and a son that rounds out my life. I feel relaxed and energized at the same time.

It helps that Gabe is a good eater and we’re not up all night trying to get some food into him. I’m more clear-headed and present than I was when Abigail was born.

And now I’m going to segue awkwardly into the following retrospective comparison of our two children, featuring photos taken on almost the same days. I think they share a really strong resemblance. Which is good for Gabe, since Abigail looks like her mother and not me.

Here you have Gabe, taken within an hour of his birth:

And here you have Abigail, also just after she was born. The comparison is made easier by the fact that they’re wearing the same hat.

Here’s Gabe, modeling a new outfit on his second day in the outside world:

And here’s Abigail, illustrating the value of gender neutral baby clothes. Abigail could use this photo to start taunting her brother with chants of “I did it first,” but she’s above that kind of petty rivalry:

Here’s Gabe resting on my lap earlier today, day 5 post-utero:

And here’s Abigail, a little less lively, in my arms on or around the same day.

And now a final comparison, featuring the both of them in all their awesome glory:

Let me take a moment to talk about how awesome Abigail has been this week. She has been loving and careful around Gabe. While she has been a little sad not to have as much access to her Momma, she has taken it all with a grown-up grace well beyond her three years. I’m more proud of her than I can possibly say.

And now here’s a bonus picture of Gabe, since that boy really needs to start raising his profile around here.

Birthday Boy

First of all, let me introduce Gabe.

Gabriel Victor Gorman, born November 25, 2011.

Around 9:30 on Friday morning, it became clear that Jessica’s water had broken, but her contractions hadn’t started yet. We told the midwives to start heading over and I started getting the room ready for the new baby’s arrival, feeling confident that I had more time than I needed. At 10:05, things seemed to be starting up, so I called Bill and told him to come over so the he could watch Abigail. Our first midwife arrived at about 10:45. The second got there around five minutes later.

Gabe was born at 10:56.

Jessica does not mess around when it’s time to have a baby.

Abigail was at her mother’s side the whole time, observing, fascinated, not making a sound. She had two questions after the fact. The first was about the noises Momma was making. The second was why the midwives helped me dress the baby. Other than that, it was just a really interesting show to watch. And now we have a baby, so the whole thing has been a big win for her so far.

This next photo is going to be one of my all-time favorites for life.

Gabe almost immediately displayed his solidarity with OWS.

Here are our mid-wives, Jamin and La Shel, filling in for me in our photo composition.

A wider view of the Gabe and his first outfit. We settled on a lions and giraffes them through a strict, grab-from-the-top-of-the-pile system.

And the required weigh-in shot. The feet are really the highlight.

The Quotable Abigail, Part XXIII

On what she wants to write on her Thanksgiving stickers in the space for what she’s thankful for: “These stickers.”

On things to say at 4 am, just as Dad is convinced you’ve fallen back to sleep: “Daddy, do you like ladybugs?”

On what to say to me and Momma: “Okay, give me all your things, ladies.”

On things to get giddy about when dressing yourself: “Tag in the back! Look!”

On things to say to your breakfast, complimentary: “You’re a hot little waffle.”

On the contents of the toilet: “I like this soup you made.”

On the stars, the general inaccessibility of: “But there’s no way to get off this planet.”

On battle cries: “Eat your pants!”

On hide-and-seek strategy: “Don’t look in the bed, okay?”

On why she needs to get her water cup out of the yard: “Before it’s dark and the coyotes come and snatch it from the hills.”

Abstraction

This item on boingboing brought me joy. I thought I’d share it with you.

Warning: This is humor of a highly nerdy character.

Needem

I drove Abigail to pre-school this morning, while we listened to Florence + The Machine’s “Remain Nameless.” Toward the end of the song, Abigail asked me, “What kind of phone is a Needem?”

I had no response to this. Through investigations, questions, answers, and, yes, a few tears – tears come quickly these days when Abigail is frustrated by our lack of comprehension – I realized that she was misunderstanding some of the lyrics. As a lifelong lyric-mangler, I have a lot of sympathy for this point of view.

There’s a refrain in the song, “Call me when you need me,” which Abigail translated to, roughly, “Call me with your needem.” Hence, “What kind of phone is a Needem?”
