Hummingbird Update

The hummingbirds are growing quickly. The mother doesn’t sit on the next very often any more. I’m guessing it’s a little beaky for bottom comfort. She does return frequently to feed the babies, which you can see her doing here:

Taken through our kitchen window. She does notice us here and will flap around the window and try to get rid of us. She finds us very irritating. If you’re wondering what an irritated hummingbird looks like, please see the following:

She may be pissed because I keep taking pictures of her babies. Annoying for her, but good for you. Here’s the photo retrospective from eggs to current, pictures taken every couple days.

My favorite part of this one is the broken egg shells.

That final one I took last night. The eggs hatched on April 3rd, and yesterday was the 15th, which makes them almost two weeks old in this picture. They apparently leave the nest around 3 weeks, so I’ll keep taking pictures and keep you updated on what’s going on with our birds.

I’ll leave you with another video of an angry hummingbird, slightly longer, and at a slightly less optimal angle. If you listen closely, you can hear the call of a wild Gabe in the background.

None of This is True

So, the kids and I have been working on an opera*. It could be considered more of a standard musical, but Abigail really hits the high notes during her solos, so it sounds all opera-y. It’s about a reindeer and a bug. We’ve already got the costumes worked out.

They become friends and then they hang out. They do a lot of hanging out, as well as some lounging. In the later acts there’s some fussing and generalized squealing.

The conflict arises when the evil scientists try to create a reindeer-bug hybrid. Most dastardly. Due to the genius of our costume design, the change to the hybrid can be done with startling speed.

Of course, the hybrid Reindeer-Bug is actually cute and friendly. So maybe the scientists aren’t so dastardly, after all.

Did I mention that this opera is terrible?

*Please refer to the title of this post. If Abigail is ever involved in the creation of a real opera, rest assured that it would involve ponies.

Photo Ops

Abigail has been demanding that we take her photo a lot lately. Often, she has a whole setup and framing in mind. And usually it does involve her brother, or, at the very least, a new outfit. For example, the other day, she set up an entire photo area beside her bed, complete with floor blanket and pillows for lounging. Then she demanded that her brother join her and that I take the picture.

Fortunately, Gabe was a fan of the pillow setup.

This doesn’t always come out this nicely. Yesterday, she tried to arrange an on-the-lap photo in the corner. Gabe was less enthusiastic on this occasion.

Abigail is rarely put off by bad press, however. She’s keen to find photo ops in all areas of life, whenever she things she can create one. Or that one has arisen naturally. For example, I found her hiding out this weekend with Kim at a family get together.

What better place to make your hideout but beneath the food table?

Quite a few of her photo ops are actually pretty dull, but every now and then she has an idea that makes taking an actual picture difficult. Like this one, for example.

Not a clear shot in the bunch. But a fun picture to take all the same.

Birdies

Last year, Abigail pointed at the wind chime we have hanging in our backyard and said that she wanted to see that bird. If she hadn’t it’s possible we would never have noticed the hummingbird nest up there. We left if alone all year and a couple weeks ago, we noticed that it had been repaired and built up a little bit.  The hummingbird momma was back.

And you know what it turns out hummingbird momma’s hate? Having their pictures taken. Or children playing in the backyard. Or cats.

Anyway, she flew up in a huff seconds after that last picture was taken. She likes to buzz us and hover in front of us, just out of reach, just to make sure we know she’s on to us.

I tried to capture a picture of her threatening hover, but this was the best shot I got. Actually I was pretty impressed that I even got this one.

The nest is well over my head, but she can’t guard the nest all the time, and I have a camera phone to take advantage of those opportunities. Here’s what I found inside the nest:

Actually, it’s more accurate to say that this picture shows what I found several days ago. I took another look last night and found this:

So we have a baby bird!

I’m sure the mother bird would dispute the whole “we” thing, as she fluttered around my head, chirping angrily. She really is a loud bird, which isn’t something I normally associate with hummingbirds.

I’ll keep you posted as the bird development program progresses.

This is Kind of a BFG

For those of you who haven’t heard, my brother and sister-in-law, Andy and Megan, had their first child early this morning. I’d liked to congratulate them, send them all my love and introduce the tiny handful of people who read this blog and don’t know this already to Benjamin Frederick Gorman.

Ben,

I’d like to introduce myself. I’m your uncle Alex. Now, your parents will spend a lot of time telling you how wonderful I am, but I don’t want you to start thinking that I’m some sort of celebrity. I’m looking forward to getting to know you and hanging out. Although, to be honest, you’ll probably want to spend more time hanging out with these two:

They’re your cousins, and they’re pretty excited to meet you, too. I tried to get Gabe to say, “Happy Birthday, Ben,” this morning, but all he managed to say was, “Happy.” So, on behalf of your cousin Gabe, I’d like to wish you, “Happy.”

And your cousin Abigail provided a bonus quotable, special for your special day. On the occasion of the birth of her cousin: “He’s lucky to have my Aunt Megan for a mama.”

There are a lot of other people around you’ll want to get to know. Listen to those Knight girls. They’re older and have more experience and I’m sure they will take good care of you as you navigate the complex hierarchy and pageantry of the Petaluma Gorman community.

But most importantly, welcome to the world, nephew. You’ve got great parents and a great family. And Jessica, Abigail, Gabe and I can’t wait to meet you in person.

The Quotable Abigail, Part 46

On the nature of things:  “The poop is more patient than the pee.”

On pinching Daddy’s neck, which correlates poorly with my experience of graham crackers: “It feels like graham crackers, doesn’t it?”

On talking to Gabe: “When he was in the tummy, he was a great listener to me.”

On the secret she needs to whisper to Grandma Pat: “Call my dad, ‘banana pants.'”

On leaping wildly in front of the mirror and four year old views on efficiency: “I was just jumping my shirt down.”

On the preparations for taking a walk: “Everything’s in order.”

On why her brother is suddenly lying in the grass: “I was just helping him down.”

On misusing the word “often” in regard to a particular song: “My teacher doesn’t awfully sing that.”

On what’s on offer at her tea party: “A nice spotch of tea.”

On explaining our roles to Mom: “Gabriel is Captain Hook and I’m the crocodile and Daddy is busy.”

Tuesday Post

I’m trying to post more regularly on my blog, so I’m making an effort to put something up every Tuesday and Thursday. However, this Tuesday is proving to be a challenging and full one. So I’m just giving you this photo. It’s of Abigail, having a grand time with her grandparents at Moonlight Beach in Carlsbad.

My dad took this picture, with his phone, which is a pretty startling fact in and of itself.

The Quotable Abigail, Part 45

On being told to go to sleep: “I am already asleep.”

On her parents hugging: “I want you two to spread apart.”

On getting a pair of socks for Gabe: “I’ll check in the sock house to see who might be available.”

On what that drawing of a clear, unlabeled bottle represents: “Wine.”

On why she is grabbing my stomach and jiggling fiercely: “Just doing the dancing belly.”

On other animals that have wings, besides ducks: “Ponies.”

On the clear, detailed instructions she just received regarding the location on her snack: “Where’s my snack?”

On how she’s growing up in a very different world than I did: “I didn’t know what Starbucks you were talking about.”

On I have no idea what, Maggie-related: “These are her clothes for the passionfruit!”

On how to tell Gave she no longer needed his “assistance” with her puzzle: “Thank you. You’re such a big help.”
